How many of us really know all the traffic rules in India ? You might be thinking, "yes I know how the traffic lights work and what zebra crossings are for". Do you think that is enough to drive a car on road ?
There are also other signs on the road which we overlook or we don't understand what they really mean. To drive safe on the roads, having a proper knowledge over traffic rules are very important. It can save your life and others aswell.
You might notice there are yellow and white lines on the roads. But many people don't know why they use 2 colours or different patters. No its not for decoration, each pattern and colour represent different traffic rules.
Broken White Line
You definetly saw this line on road while driving. Do you know what it means?
This broken white line indicates that you are allowed to switch lane but with caution. So change lane when its safe to do.
Solid White Line
If you see solid white lines don't change lane. It means you have to drive on the same lane you are in.
One Solid Yellow Line
When you see one solid yellow line it means you can overtake other vehicles but staying inside the marked yellow line. You cannot pass the yellow line. However, this rule may vary from state to state. For example, in Telangana, a solid yellow line is intended for establishing no overtaking.
Broken Yellow Line
Passing is allowed over broken yellow line but definetly with caution.
Double Solid Yellow Lines
If you see this remember passing is not allowed over double solid yellow lines.
Solid Yellow Line with Broken Yellow Line
So if you see these lines on the road remember, if you are driving on the side of the solid yellow line, then you are not allowed to overtake and if you are driving on the side of the broken yellow line, then you are allowed to overtake.
